Computer: Dell XPS 420 OS: Windows 7 64-bit Sound Card: SIGMATEL STAC 92XX C-Major HD Audio I upgraded my machine to Windows 7 64-bit couple weeks ago; however, the sound card is not working properly. I have Logitech Z-5500 Digital 5.1 Speaker and is required to install Sound Blaster Audigy MB Software.

When I installed Sound Blaster Audigy MB Software, I got an error message 'sound card cannot be found'. Without installing Sound Blaster Audigy MB Software, I still able to hear sound from two speakers (not all 5 speakers). I just wonder if Dell has laterest driver for SIGMATEL STAC 92XX C-Major HD Audio? There are Vista 64 bit drivers on the Dell downloads and they should work for Win 7 64 bit. There are no SoundBlaster Audigy MB software on the Dell downloads as this is an optional at extra cost item that also requires a product key to activate. I don't know if the Vista software will work on Win 7. It is not a 'sound card' it is only a software enhancement to the Integrated Audio and is not needed for 5.1 speaker operation as the SigmaTel will support that as it is.

Did you configure the speaker type in the Control Panel/Hardware and Sound/Sound Panel? Select your speakers as the Default Playback device and then click on the Configure button and set it for 5.1 speaker type.

You can test the speakers in the configuration panel. Dell does not have any Windows 7 drivers listed which means they are not going to support Windows 7 with this model.

However, since Windows 7 is basically 'Vista Improved' it shouldn't be a problem. Also, keep in mind Dell is in the business of selling new computers - it may sound harsh but it is the reality.

Fixed on Dell XPS m1530 updated from vista 32b to win 7 64b. 1 - Download the driver SIGMATEL STAC 92XX C-Major HD Audio Driver from dell.com - link below. 2 - Remove any sound device from your system manager, then when you are asked DO NOT restart the system.

3 - Run the R190517.exe and try to install the driver, It will bring and error, such as device not present or something like that. Reboot your system. 4 - Go to device manager.

Locate Sound, video game controller. Right over it and choose update. Browse to C: Dell Drivers R190517, confirm. Reboot when asked, when the system come back on check the sound system work as it should. Been having a similar issue and none of the above suggestions have helped. Recently upgraded the memory in my XPS 420 to 6 gigs so I had to switch from the 32 bit build of windows which I never had an issue with to the 64 bit version Win 7 (sp1) which refuses to accept the driver. I've tried the compatibility for Vista (including the SP's) and XP and I either get the component not found error or it'll install but will display the speakers/headphones as unplugged and can't do anything at all to make it work.

I've lost track of how many times i've tried installing, deleting, uninstalling and reinstalling and i've yet to find anything that seems to work. Any help would be appreciated.

Prior to switching to windows 10 32bit, I could dock my dell D630 laptop in the dock, and the coax digital out on the dock worked perfectly(in windows 7). I did have to switch the playback device to the sigmatel HD audio device everytime I docked it to get the digital audio out, but it worked and sounded great. Since I switched to windows 10(thru a clean install), I have not been able to get any audio(digital or analog) to work out of the dock. After installing windows 10, I did not have the sigmaltel HD audio playback device, so I downloaded the vista 32bit driver from dell support and installed it.

Now I have the sigmatel HD audio device to pick from under my playback devices, but it does not work as it should. Here's the thing. If I am playing something with sound, when I switch over to the sigmatel device I will get sound over the coax connection for about 2 seconds, then it stops. If I switch back then back to the sigmaltel, I get 2 seconds of audio again. If I hit the test button, I get 2 seconds of audio. The only way I can get sounds while docked is to plug a analog input into the headphone jack on the laptop.

I have tried installing the drivers multiple times, tried installing in compatibility mode, removing the device and reinstalling in device manager, so far nothing has worked. I've searched on the web and people also seem to have this problem with windows 7, which I did not. Makes me think there might be a trick or hack to get this working, but I can't find it.
